The VOLUME Summer Program at Bethany Children’s Health Center is a service-based, hands-on learning experience for high school students hoping to pursue degrees or careers in medicine, allied health, and healthcare administration. 

 

Participants have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with multiple staff members of various healthcare-related fields, pediatric patients at bedside, special education classrooms, and in groups of fellow peers from schools throughout the Oklahoma City metro.

About Our Program:

 

The VOLUME Summer Program at Bethany Children’s Health Center is a service-based, hands-on learning experience for high school students hoping to pursue degrees or careers in:

  • Medicine
  • Allied Health
  • Healthcare Administration.

 

Students will have the opportunity to learn about the internal workings of a hospital with positions such as:

  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Child Life
  • Recreational Therapy
  • and Much More!

 

Participants have the opportunity to work and interact one-on-one with the Hospital’s pediatric patients at bedside, special education classrooms, and groups. VOLUME also includes skill, character and team-building activities, educational presentations from multiple hospital staff, and job shadowing opportunities to prepare for college, career, and life.

 

Participants can expect to build lasting friendships with their peers, experience hospital interaction with multiple medical disciplines, and receive exposure to a pediatric hospital setting.

Volunteer - Time Commitment:

 

2024 Session Dates and Times

 

VOLUME will be offered in one session for 20 students. Due to the highly competitive nature of the VOLUME Summer Program, a required in-person interview and thorough onboarding process for each VOLUME participant which may take up to three visits to the hospital.

 

VOLUME Summer Program - 2024 Session (Class VIIII)

  • Begins Monday, June 3rd through Thursday, June 20th
  • VOLUME participants meet daily (Monday through Thursday, for three weeks.
  • Each day of VOLUME begins at 8:15 am and ends by 12:00 pm.
  • The first day of VOLUME (Monday, June 5th) is MANDATORY.

 

If your application is accepted, in-person interviews will be conducted the 2nd and 3rd week of April.

Volunteer - Benefits:

 

Participants in the VOLUME Summer Program benefit from the following:

 

  • Access to hospital staff of multiple medical disciplines who will discuss the educational and professional pathways necessary to reach their position, daily tasks within their discipline, and tips for VOLUME participants.

 

  • Access to direct one-on-one pediatric patient interaction.

 

  • Peer-to-peer interaction and bonding with participants from schools located across the central Oklahoma area.

 

  • An intensive and educational program which can give the participant a better understanding of their medical field interest or exposure to a new field which they may not have been aware of.

 

  • Curriculum centered around professional and personal skill development designed to prepare for future medical career fields.

Immunization Records

  • All VOLUME Summer Program participants must provide documentation or proof of having received the following required vaccinations: 
    • Varicella (Chicken Pox)
      • Must have received twice in lifetime.
        • If not, the hospital can provide free-of-charge if accepted into the program.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
      • Must have received twice in lifetime.
        • If not, the hospital can provide free-of-charge if accepted into the program.
    • COVID-19
      • Vaccination is not required to attend the program but will be requested.
      • If a student has not received this vaccination, a decline letter must be completed by a parent and/or legal guardian.

 

  • All accepted VOLUME Summer Program applicants must complete two Tuberculosis Skin tests.
    • Vaccines and Tuberculosis Skin tests can be provided at no-cost.
